Characteristics

Don’t forget to pay a lot of attention to the broadhead you plan to insert into your arrow if you plan to hunt big-boned animals like elk, especially if you plan to hunt such animals.

With the broadhead attached to the arrow, the arrow cuts through the air and impacts the animal on impact because it is slicing through the air.

A broadhead’s design determines its flight characteristics and durability, whether mechanical, fixed-blade or a popular hybrid.

Choosing the right broadhead for elk hunting

Reliability: Fixed

Most of my recommendations here will be fixed-blade broadheads. The fixed blade is less likely to malfunction than a mechanical blade, despite some hunters’ preferences. Fixed blades are reliable without a doubt.

Froze Mechanical Rubberband

As a result of my mechanical broadhead, I lost an opportunity to take a shot, and I was kicked in the tail afterwards. My broadhead’s rubberband froze, and when I drew back, there were two blades forward and one blade back.

Despite my best efforts, the bull had already run away when I fumbled to fix it.

Cut On Contact

In addition, mechanical broadheads cut on contact, which is another reason I prefer them. By not transferring kinetic energy to the mechanical blade, they give the arrow a little extra oomph when entering the animal.

Larger Cutting

Elk have been dropped with mechanical blades by many hunters. Due to its larger cutting diameter, mechanical blades can easily outperform fixed blades in terms of cutting efficiency.

Larger wounds leave more blood trails behind, so tracking is easier. You might find a kill, lose track, and let it go to waste.

Options & Preference

There are four mechanical broadhead options available for those who prefer them to fixed blades. It has taken down several elk for me, so I can attest to its effectiveness.

Mechanical broadheads for elk are just as effective at killing an animal as fixed broadheads, but I prefer fixed blades because they offer slight advantages.
